Sunil Gulati is an American economist and soccer administrator who served as the President of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) from 2006 to 2018. He was born on May 30, 1959 in Allahabad, India, and moved to the United States as a child. Gulati has a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University and taught at Columbia and Yale University before becoming involved in soccer administration.
During his tenure as President of the USSF, Gulati oversaw significant growth in the sport in the United States, including the establishment of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the successful bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, he also faced criticism for the failure of the U.S. Men's National Team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
In addition to his work with the USSF, Gulati has been involved in various roles with FIFA, CONCACAF, and the International Olympic Committee. He was instrumental in bringing the 1994 World Cup to the United States and has been a key figure in the growth of soccer in the country.
